Nominated for the Nobel Prize, the classic pacifist novel was written by a major Polish author. "Only the villages are asleep, the eternal reservoir of all kinds of soldiery, the inexhaustible source of physical strength," is the opening line of the novel. The story takes place in the Carpathian mountains at the turn of the twentieth century, where the villagers live a simple and isolated life unaffected by the outside world.
Piotr, a bandy-legged peasant, is the focus of the novel. His entire life revolves around carrying things and all he desires is an official railway cap, a cottage with a mouse-trap and cheese, and a bride with a dowry. However, when the First World War arrives in the mountains, Piotr is drafted into the army. Despite being unwilling and bewildered, he is forced to fight in a war that he does not comprehend, conflicting with both his national and personal interests.
Titled "Salt of the Earth," the novel is strongly pacifist and draws inspiration from the Odyssey. It explores the consequences of war on ordinary men. This new translation, authorized by the author's daughter, provides readers with a fresh perspective on the powerful and timeless story.
